In the world of electric vehicles, two numbers matter more than almost anything else under the hood: SOC and SOH. Together, they tell you everything about how your EV battery is performing today — and how much life it has left. Understanding both helps drivers get the most range, value, and longevity out of their vehicle.

What is State of Charge (SOC)?

State of Charge is simply how full your battery is right now, shown as a percentage — the EV equivalent of a fuel gauge. It tells you how much range you have left before your next charge. Your vehicle's Battery Management System (BMS) constantly monitors SOC using a combination of voltage readings and current tracking, adjusting in real time as you drive, brake, and charge.

Keeping SOC in a healthy range — generally between 20% and 80% for daily use — helps protect the battery from the stress of frequent full charges or deep discharges.

What is State of Health (SOH)?

State of Health reflects the overall condition of the battery compared to when it was brand new. While SOC changes minute to minute, SOH changes slowly over months and years as the battery naturally ages. It's expressed as a percentage of the battery's original capacity — a 90% SOH means the battery can now hold about 90% of the charge it could when new.

SOH is affected by factors like the number of charge cycles, exposure to extreme temperatures, fast-charging habits, and overall vehicle age. Most manufacturers guarantee batteries will maintain a minimum SOH (often 70-80%) over an 8-year warranty period.

The UAE's high temperatures accelerate battery degradation more than in cooler climates, making regular SOH checks especially important here. A battery health inspection helps catch early signs of capacity loss before they affect daily driving range or resale value.
